Preparing...

While I'm waiting for my next round of appointments in this WLS journey I've been doing lots of different things to prepare myself for the changes ahead:
  • Logging daily food, exercise, water and vitamins
  • Reading loads of WLS blogs
  • Sampling different types of protein
  • Eating slower with lots of chewing (this is a tough one!)
  • Not drinking during meals (another tough one!)
  • Giving up the diet pepsi (so sad...)
  • Searching for some calcium citrate that isn't disgusting (haven't found it yet!)
What did you do to prepare?

I started out with the intention of getting the lap band, but after talking with my surgeon she suggested the gastric bypass.  I spent a couple of months trying to figure out which way to go and in the end I'm going to go with the bypass.  I keep having 2nd thoughts about the whole thing, but I think that's just fear or cold feet.  Did you have 2nd thoughts?

  1. My intention was lap band as well but I ended up going with the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy and I have ZERO regrets. It has been almost a year and I am down 122 pounds. Just remember that in order to be successful for the rest of your life you have to be willing to put in the work because that is exactly what it is...work. It is not a solution but rather a tool and if you go into this journey understanding that you will be successful.

A very helpful blog you should read (if you haven't come across it yet) is http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com. She had gastric bypass a little more than 5 years ago and has kept her weight off. She has GREAT recipes too. Everyone has their own tastes and preferences when it comes to protein but Eggface offers up some fabulous recipes for some pretty tastey protein shakes.

Best of luck to you and even though I had a different procedure than you, feel free to read my blog for helpful tips with most everything you listed above.

  2. Thanks for visiting and sharing your experience! It's such a big decision and so much needs to be considered.

I found Eggface about 4-5 weeks ago and have been trying a bunch of her protein shake recipes and they are delish! I love adding the PB2 to them as well.

I have been reading your blog and it's very inspirational and loaded with tips! I wish you continued success!!

  3. I also thought about the band, but decided to go with the rny. I have been textbook successful . . .not one complication thus far (thank God). It has been a lifesaver. I use the pure protein brand that I get at Target or the walmart comparable version with 26g per serving. I ordered a bunch of sugar free syrups from netrition.com. They go a long way in mixing up the protein shake flavors when mixed with vanilla protein. You can use chocolate protein too . . .I just like the versatility of the vanilla. You're on the right track and doing everything right. Keep it up. And continue to reach out to others for help in answering questions and for support. I found that while the people that I told have been supportive, no one really gets it like a fellow wls'er. Do you have a date in mind?

  4. Hi Kelly! I'm hoping for the beginning of March. We're supposed to go to Florida mid April (lots of relaxing by the pool)and I'd like to have a month under my belt.
